“Sanctuary for the Goddess: The Legacy of Visionary Artist Ted Specker,” is the title of the July 2019 Exhibit at the Deming Art Center, presented by Sylvia Brenner, a friend of the artist. In the late 80’s, Ted joined the Intentional Community of City of the Sun near Columbus, NM. At his request he was assigned an off the grid, dusty, barren desert lot. A non-traditional artist, he began creating many outdoor sculptures honoring Mother Earth. Two of his first sculptures, Copper Woman and Mother Earth Breast, were documented by the Smithsonian Institution’s NM Survey in 1994 called “Save Outdoor Sculptures.”
Ted was called uneducated, scruffy and a creative genius depending on who was commenting. He died unexpectedly in 2006 just short of 71. Those who knew him say his greatest legacy was not his work, but his kindness and example of how to live a creative, artistic and passionate life despite mainstream culture.
The Deming Art Center is located at 100 S. Gold St, Deming, NM. Hours are from 10AM – 4PM, Mon- Sat (closed July 4). There will be an artist reception on Sunday, July 7, from 1-3PM. The show will run from July 2 – 30. For more information, please call 575-546-3663 or see our Facebook page.
